Question 1: What results did you expect to see?

I expected that my culture dimensions would be a high context because it is affected by the surrounding environment. I am referring to where I live (in the UAE) which consider a high context culture. For instance, I expected to be a universal relationship. UAE society mainly Honor/Shame worldview. Communication, interpersonal interaction, and business dealings are very relationship-driven, with every interaction having an effect on the honor/shame status of the participants. (knowledgeworkx, Three Colors of Worldview , 2012) UAE is a high contact society and people use to meet new people and communicate with them. They are generous and they easily invite you home, for an evening meal or ask you to attend a social gathering. The personal result in my work environment shows that I scour 4 point on universal relationships. If someone enters my immediate circle he or she becomes part of all spheres of my life.
Also I expected to tend towards being people oriented in growth, because I believe that developing people can in turn develop effective systems and procedures rather than purely looking at the development of systems.

Question 2: Which dimension would you wish to change?

I wish that I can change the dimension of Making Decision because relationships tend to have a stronger impact on the way I make decisions. I could break the rules, policies or procedures if necessary to maintain the relationship. This for sure will cause some challenges in the workplace. Furthermore, I definitely want to change the inclusive connecting style, because I share information quite freely. For example I invite people to be part of conversations even if they might not need to be part. Also I wish to change the context dimension because I tend to value an open environment where rules and protocol are not obstructing the free development of key relationships. I tend to be casual and informal, valuing differences more than conformity.

Question 3: What can you do to improve your cultural awareness?

To improve my culture awareness I would like to scores in between the dimension to understand the difference between all the cultures easily. For example, I have to balance statues dimension, to be Achieved and Ascribed and to understand other people. Also Destiny, Context, and Growth dimension.  In order to improve my cultural awareness I need to try standing in people shoes. Through empathy we learn of how other people would like to be treated by us. Likewise I have to check my assumptions by asking colleagues for feedback and regularly check my assumptions to make sure that I understand the situation. (Quappe & Cantatore , 2005)

Question 4: Choose one dimension in which the results were a surprise.

I was surprised with the result of Expression dimension because I tend to be Conceal oriented. Usually people with a concealing expression style would typically not show emotions and feelings openly and will probably be of the opinion that showing feelings and emotions in the work environment are inappropriate. If a person with a concealing style of expression wants to show emotions or feelings they are normally very calculated and have an express purpose.  And I thought that I’m totally the opposite.

“Culture Clash


  1.  In Paris People are professional and formal Also they are stick with their personal freedom. It’s inappropriate to take off their ties and roll up their sleeves. Whatever the situation in the meeting room was. They must maintain a formal appearance.
  2. In Japan People live lives that are run by time and they tend to follow rules more seriously as well as they respect the time. So it is Impolite to be funny when they ask about due date.
  3. In Arabic counters, it is inappropriate to talk about work matters in a party.
  4. In China People have a keen sense of the value of time, being late shows no respect and it is offensive in china.
  5. The Spanish secretary should take into account time zone difference and send the Report earlier
  6. Chinese people believe that hot towels used only for hand. Also it is not tact.

Sara: Have you made any vacation plans?

Salama: Well, I’ve decided on one thing – I’m going to London.

Sara: That’s great! For how long?

Salama: maybe a week – I only have five days of vacation.

Sara: So, when are you leaving?

Salama: I’m not sure – I’ll probably leave around the end of May.

Sara: And where are you going to go?

Salama: I haven’t thought about that yet –  I guess I’ll go to Hyde Park, and London Eye.

Salama: That sounds like fun.

  1. Power Distance:

A distinction between the bosses and subordinates. Like the relationships between the bosses and employees maybe he is from the family members or friends.Slovakia have a highest score (100) to be consider as a power distance in compared to Egypt with score (70).

  1. Uncertainty Avoidance

Uncertainty avoidance deals with a society’s tolerance for uncertainty and ambiguity; it ultimately refers to man’s search for Truth. It indicates to what extent a culture programs its members to feel either uncomfortable or comfortable in unstructured situations. Unstructured situations are novel, unknown, surprising, and different from usual.Slovakia had a low score (51) compared to Egypt with score (80).

  1. Individualism

Individualism is the one side versus its opposite, collectivism, that is the degree to which individuals are integrated into groups. On the individualist side we find societies in which the ties between individuals are loose: everyone is expected to look after him/herself and his/her immediate family.For example, Slovakia can be considered as individualistic with a relatively high score (52) on the scale of Hofstede compared to Egypt which the score is (25).In Slovakia people stress on personal achievements and individual rights.

  1. Masculinity

The divided of roles between the genders.Slovakia have a highest score in distribution roles between the genders the score is (100). But Egypt had a score (45) which is a very low score. Those that score low on this dimension have fewer differences between genders and place a higher value on relationship building.

  1. Long-Term Orientation

This dimension describes a society’s time horizon. Short-term oriented cultures value traditional methods, take a considerable amount of time to build relationships, and in general view time as circular.Slovakia had a score of (77) but Egypt had a score of (7).

  1. Indulgence versus Restraint

This dimension measures a culture’s ability to satisfy the immediate needs and personal desires of its members.Slovakia had a score of (28) and Egypt had score (4).








The greeting is a way of communicating to know each other, and it’s different from a place to another and it’s depends on their culture. Our First lesson in LSS 2113 class was about GREETING. We did some interesting activates; we greet each other using different type of greeting from different cultures. For example:  touching elbows, jumping, punching on the shoulder, blinking eyes, and Bending. I learnt that greeting another person is an important way of showing respect, and understanding other cultures helps us to empathize with different kind of people.
